Parent shares social media secrets to success

S5 pupils welcomed a volunteer parent from the Parent Council this week to learn about how to gain the competitive edge for job, college and university applications through social media. Learning how to use social media for research, how to project a balanced and well presented profile, and how to manage security settings was the agenda. There were gasps of horror when pupils Googled themselves. Most were not aware that tagged images of themselves appear in searches. Many had old social media accounts, as well, that they had forgotten about, which did not reflect their present selves at all well. They had not known that the average age of Twitter users is over 35 years. Nor did they know that businesses routinely screen applicants online now. Everyone left with homework: to review all their accounts and then get them in shape for the coming competition for jobs, college or university.
