‘Year of Code’? What’s that?
Not all education initiatives come from the government. There is, for example, a campaign underway now to help transform computer science in our schools. It seems like something that everybody would support. But since its launch last week, the Year Of Code has turned into something of a PR disaster. Its director has admitted she doesn’t know how to code (which is to say, write software), and there’s been derision and confusion from some in the IT industry and from many teachers about the mission and its objectives. The BBC, who is one of the industry partners in the initiative, reports on what may be going wrong.
