Help & Homebaking Needed for BHSA Fundraising Chess Café This Saturday! 28 February 2026

We have another school charity fundraising Community Chess Café this Saturday 28 February & we are REALLY SHORT OF HELPERS. We have only had 3 signups since promoting this out over the last few weeks which is not enough to keep the café open. Are you or your kids free to help?

If a group of pupils/parents are keen to fundraise for an upcoming trip or event BHSA are happy to support pupil fundraising efforts. We are able to offer the incentive of £150 of funds raised on the day as a direct contribution towards your fundraising. This would be in exchange for pupils/parents helping on the day and donating baked items in. However this is subject to the amount of help offered, so not just 1 or 2 helpers.

Saturday’s café is not just for our chess families! Anyone watching a football match/practice at the school pitches, or hanging around/collecting from an Edinburgh Dance Academy class, or attending CEC Adult Education Classes at BHS are also very welcome to pop by our café in the Hub for something to eat or drink!

Event Information

Our community café is open from 9am until 4pm in the Hub area offering items for breakfast, lunch & tea time, including snacks throughout the day. We often sell out by early afternoon. It’s really popular, relied on and much appreciated by the young chess competitors taking part, and their accompanying parents/carers who are with them for the day. Saturday 28 February is the Lothian Junior Chess Championships and we will have 150 players with their families with us from across the city.

Further information on our Chess Cafes, including photos, feature in our end of year BHSA Newsletter 2024-25 or on our website https://broughtonhighpc.org/broughton-high-school-association/.

Who Can Help?

Parents/carers, or pupils, or even staff, are all welcome to help. It’s an enjoyable experience and a great way to meet others at the school. Volunteering can count towards any work-based schemes that your employer may offer. For pupils helping is not only valuable volunteering experience, hours can be used towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award or as house points!

CALLING ALL BAKERS!! Are you a keen baker or have a budding chef at home?

We really rely on homemade donations of savoury/sweet bakes &/or soup for our Chess Cafes. Homebakes really help boost our profits & the more money we make – the more we get to spend on school. If you are able to donate something please let us know via this form https://forms.gle/p1Z7isrX8ERE5v617 (just click on the link to complete). Parents, pupils or staff can make something to contribute.

How To Donate Food:

Absolutely NO NUTS please – this includes nut oils, nut flours, nut butters & nut milks – BHS is a NO NUTS school & we have individuals attending with nut allergies. Soup must be vegan. Anything suitable for those with allergens or on special diets is very welcome. You can drop off in the Hub from 8:30am on Saturday as there is access through the main school entrance. Please label any help containers with your name & mobile number to make sure that they come back to you.

Where Does the Fundraising Money Go?

All money raised by the event goes into school funding projects and resources via our BHSA charity funds. Over the last few months we’ve funded Sports Bibs in House Colours for House Events, S3/S4 Mathematics Team competing in the Enterprising Maths competition in Glasgow & renewing the Modern Language’s Active Hub website licence for pupils learning French, Spanish & German.

A full list of what we have funded at Broughton High School over the last few years features in our end of year BHSA Newsletter 2024-25 or is up on our website https://broughtonhighpc.org/broughton-high-school-association/.

This Saturday’s fundraising Community Chess Cafe is one of 7 running this year for Lothian Junior Chess competitions at BHS, which include Team Days, Edinburgh Junior Congress, Lothian Junior Championships, the UKCC Scotland East Megafinal & a 2 day UK Chess Challenge Scottish Gigafinal. Thanks to everyone who helps and bakes for our Cafes throughout the year & thanks to all of our visiting chess families for their generosity and support at our cafes.

BHSA is YOUR school charity. From their gifted school tie in S1 to helping fund the S6 Prom, every pupil at Broughton High benefits from BHSA funding during their time at the school, making us a very worthy cause to support and get involved with!

Thanks in advance for your help. Please spread the word to other parents if you know they’re wanting to help.
