SCHOOL CHARITY FUNDRAISING EVENTS IN JUNE 2026

The BHSA (our school charity – the Broughton High School Association) has THREE fundraising events this June & we need volunteers & homebake donations to make them happen.

DEAN GARDENS OPEN AFTERNOON – SUNDAY 7 JUNE 2-4pm

We are delighted to be hosting a stall again at this event serving bakes & teas/coffees up near the Gardener’s Hut. If you are around to help with set up, serving or take down you can sign up here https://volunteersignup.org/MRQBH.

Home bakes are very welcome – just drop them off at our stall from 2pm.

The Open Afternoon is part of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme & there will be art activities, live music and artwork for sale. There’s also a super wooden playground for younger kids. If you are in Stockbridge in the afternoon the gardens are well worth a visit for the views – come say hi!

COMMUNITY CHESS CAFE WEEKENDER – 20 & 21 JUNE 2026

Our final fundraising Community Chess Cafés for the year are on Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 June. Are you or your kids free to help?

Event Information

Our community café is open from 9am until 4pm in the Hub area offering items for breakfast, lunch & tea time, including snacks throughout the day. We often sell out by early afternoon. It’s really popular, relied on and much appreciated by the young chess competitors taking part, and their accompanying families.

BHS is hosting the two day UK Chess Challenge Scottish Gigafinal with Lothian Junior Chess over the weekend & it’s going to be a busy one!

Our Community Café is not just for our chess families! Anyone watching a football match/practice at the school pitches, or hanging around/collecting from Edinburgh Dance Academy or City of Edinburgh Gymnastics Club classes, or attending CEC Adult Education Classes at BHS are also very welcome to pop by our café in the Hub for something to eat or drink!

Helping us for just an hour or two serving food/drinks from 9:30 onwards makes such a difference.

Who Can Help?

Parents/carers, or pupils, or even staff, are all welcome to help. It’s an enjoyable experience and a great way to meet others at the school. Volunteering can count towards any work-based schemes that your employer may offer. For pupils helping is not only valuable volunteering experience, hours can be used towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award or as house points!

If there is a group of students or parents willing to help as an incentive we are able to give £150 of funds raised on the day as a direct contribution to group fundraising efforts – this could go on the upcoming Culture Fair, S4/5 trip to Lagganlia or History trip to Bruges. This would be in exchange for a minimum of 5 pupils/parents helping on the day and donating baked items in. Please email us directly if interested.

CALLING ALL BAKERS/BUDDING CHEFS!!

We really rely on homemade donations of savoury/sweet bakes &/or soup for our Chess Cafes. Homebakes really help boost our profits & the more money we make, the more we get to spend on school!

Parents, pupils or staff can make something to contribute. Just make sure you read through the important information in our Guidelines before you start baking – via this link https://forms.gle/X5VnoS7zGofZH7x38 or available on our website (this information is required to be provided to you for health and safety as part of our risk assessment).

How To Donate Food:

Absolutely NO NUTS please – this includes nut oils, nut flours, nut butters & nut milks – BHS is a NO NUTS school & we have individuals attending with nut allergies. Soup must be vegan. Anything suitable for those with allergens or on special diets is very welcome. You can drop off in the Hub from 8:30am on Saturday or Sunday – there is access through the main school entrance.

Please label any food containers with your name & mobile number to make sure that they come back to you.

Where Does the Fundraising Money Go?

All money raised by our fundraising events goes into school funding projects and resources via our BHSA charity funds.

A full list of what we have funded at Broughton High School over the last year will feature in our end of year BHSA Newsletter which will be available at the end of term. A list of last year’s funded projects is up on our website https://broughtonhighpc.org/broughton-high-school-association/.

For more information and photos about the event please look at our website or at our end of year newsletter here: https://sway.cloud.microsoft/gl7ryPHxWT2lH2o9?ref=Link

BHSA is YOUR school charity. From a gifted school tie on starting S1 to helping fund the S6 Prom, every pupil at Broughton High benefits from BHSA funding during their time at the school. There are a number of ways of how you can support us – have a look at our website.

Thanks once again for your help. Please spread the word to other parents if you know they’re wanting to help.
