Parents and older pupils have the opportunity to meet Oxford University students and staff when they visit Edinburgh on Monday, 4 September. Their Oxford Explained presentation will take place at James Gillespie’s High School, Lauderdale Street, EH9 1DD, from 4.30pm to 6 pm.

These sessions are mainly aimed at S5 and S6 students, but can also be helpful for younger years considering Oxford. Parents and teachers are encouraged to attend too.

The Oxford Explained presentation covers all aspects of student life and the admissions process for Oxford, including course choice, the college system, tutorial teaching, admissions tests and interviews.

They aim to leave students feeling much better informed about what applying to, and studying at, Oxford would involve, as well as to break down any misconceptions about Oxford that might deter students from making an application. The sessions will be delivered by Oxford Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach office staff and supported by current students who will share their experiences.

Competition for places at Oxford is strong, and tutors would normally consider students achieving the following grades; AAAAB or AAAAA in Scottish Highers, supplemented by two or more Advanced Highers.

Conditional offers will usually be for AAB if a student is able to take three Advanced

Highers; where this is not possible then a student would be expected to achieve AA in two Advanced Highers, as well as an A grade in an additional Higher course taken in Year 6; Between A*A*A and AAA at A Level; the International Baccalaureate with around 38 40, including core points, with 6s and 7s at Higher Level, or equivalent qualifications. Ceilidh for Lucie

Parents are invited to dance the night away and raise money at the same time for S6 pupil Lucie Duffy. Lucie is leaving Edinburgh this month to spend a year in Ghana teaching with the educational charity Project Trust and she will be holding a charity ceilidh on Friday, 18th August, to help fund her trip.

It’s on from 7pm – 11pm at Dean Bowling Club, 18 Comely Bank Terrace.
Tickets are £5 Adult, £3 Children and are available on the door.

School film fun

Broughton High School Association is organising a special film event while Septemberfest takes a break this year.

The free community cinema event at the school will take place on September 30. At 3.30pm, Despicable Me 3 will be screened indoors for children, with food stalls from 5.30pm. Later that evening at 7.30pm, weather permitting, there will be an outdoors showing of Dunkirk for all the family.

The Association’s Lesley Kelly said: “To make sure that we don’t lose the high level of community engagement achieved through SeptemberFest, this year, the Broughton High School Association is organising a community cinema event. This will be free, though we will have to issue tickets to keep track of numbers.

“We will be looking for volunteers to help out with specific tasks nearer the time, but in the meantime, please do let me know if you are able to help at some point during the event.”
