The City of Edinburgh Dance School & P6/7 Talented Young Performers Choreography Competition

In August 2011, Raymond King (Kaye), a highly regarded member of the dance department staff at Broughton High School passed away after a short illness borne with great courage and dignity.

Raymond was a fantastic teacher who ensured that every student had an excellent foundation to their dance training. He was a brilliant dancer, choreographer and teacher as well as a friend and his acerbic wit and cheeky charm will be missed by all who knew him. He touched lives and influenced many people around the world through his love of dance. Raymond was a fantastic teacher, colleague & friend who inspired and is sorely missed by all.

On Friday 16 December 2012, we held the Junior Choreography Competition at Broughton High School in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Students from P6 – S3 competed in a variety of sections, all performing their own choreography, in order to raise money for the charity. It was a fantastic afternoon, which highlighted how talented the students are. Awards were given for a winner and runner-up in each section and a special memorial cup was awarded in memory of the students’ much loved teacher, Raymond King.

£700 was raised and donated to MacMillan Cancer Support – thank you very much to everyone who contributed for your generosity.

Saturday morning cafe volunteers needed

As part of trying to advertise Broughton High School to the wider community and the potential new pupils from primary schools, we run a cafe on a Saturday morning for the council run ‘Sounds like Saturday’ music classes (formally known as the YMI).

We are short of volunteers to help out with the cafe and are asking if anyone is available to help.

It would take 1 hour of your time, once or twice a month on a rota.

The benefits – it has been proved that this initiative has attracted extra pupils into the school, which means that the school has increased the numbers of pupils attending in a time of falling secondary school rolls and being able to offer more subjects at higher level.

Can you spare 1 hour on a Saturday morning to help out ?

If you can, please let us know, at intouch@broughtonhighpc.org, and we’ll be in touch!

Doran Review: Have Your Say on Complex Additional Support Needs

You are invited to a series of free half-day consultation events for parents, carers and support groups and would very much appreciate it if you could pass the information on to any parents, carers or colleagues you know who would be interested in contributing their views.

On behalf of the Scottish Government, Peter Doran is currently chairing a review of how best to provide education for Scottish children and young people with the most complex learning needs. The Doran Review will be providing recommendations to the Scottish Government in June 2012 on how the system can be improved.

These consultation events are to gather the views of both families and parent support groups on the key issues, which will be submitted to the Review.

We will be asking your views on:

● how satisfied you are with the processes to identify your child’s care, health and learning needs

● how well informed you feel about schools and services that could help your child

● how well your child’s nursery or school and other services such as health and Social Work are meeting his or her needs

● how well supported you and your child feel when he/she is preparing to leave and settling in to a new school or leaving school to go on to adult services.
