Invitation to the School Final of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI)
Here is an exciting update note to all parents and carers from John Cudlipp, in RMPS. This is an example of what CfE will look like (and that BHS senior years are already benefitting from it in advance of its formal introduction to S4-S6).
‘Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers,
I am writing to invite you to our final of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) at Broughton High School on Wednesday 14th November 2pm-3.30pm.
YPI has positively engaged secondary school students across Scotland and awarded thousands of pounds to small, local, social service charities. In January 2010 the programme was described in The Times as “something every teacher should eagerly find out about and think of introducing to their school.” Since then YPI has continued to develop and gain momentum across Scotland, and has been referenced positively in a number of HMIE School Reports.
S6 students at Broughton high School are currently taking part in YPI. In teams, they have been researching social issues in our community and creating an engaging and persuasive presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle an issue they are passionate about.
At the YPI School Final the winning teams from each class will be presenting in front of a large audience and a panel of high-profile judges, in support of their chosen charities. This event promises to be an inspiring, exciting and dramatic occasion as one team will be awarded a cheque of £3000 to grant towards their chosen charity.
I hope you will be able to attend this event, to hear about the charities and local social issues which pupils at our school have become passionate about.

Sharee Mackerron’s departure
Quite a few parents have been asking what has become of Sharee Mackerron. Just to let everyone know, she was appointed to the post of Headteacher at Alva Academy in Clackmannanshire, and took up this post in August this year. Sharee was our Acting Headteacher in the interim period between the retirement of Lesley Johnston, and the permanent appointment of current Headteacher, John Wilson. She has settled quickly into her role and is enjoying the challenges and opportunities that her new school affords. We all wish her the very best in this exciting new post.

Partnerships with Broughton High School
We are currently looking to build on the existing partnerships that we have with individuals, parents, groups, organisations and businesses. Our relationship with the community, parents and businesses is essential in providing the best opportunities for pupils at Broughton high School as well as contributing to the school and wider community. We have a number of important partnerships at present such as links with the Inter Faith organisation, Christian and Muslim communities who share first hand experiences with pupils, Humanitarian and Charity links with organisations such as the Red Cross, Headway, Make a wish Foundation, Teenage cancer Trust, Alcoholics Anonymous and many more. Businesses such as Sodexo, Waitrose, Black Horse finance, Statestreet and Douglas Brotherston and Scottish Business in the Community. These organisations and individuals provide an invaluable link for BHS pupils to gain mentoring, advice, support and also work experience opportunities to better prepare them for the transition from school to further education or the workplace. Chloe McClean 2R3 — our expert highland dancer!
Chloe McClean, who has represented the school through her excellent highland dancing, has been selected as one of the top 30 acts in this year’s Edinburgh’s Got Talent. Chloe has been courageous and confident enough to ask if the school can support her in this competition. Our Headteacher John Wilson supports this exciting prospect, and points out several ways that staff, parents and pupils can support Chloe by voting for her.
