Questioning the presence of the military in schools — public debate 11 Oct. 2012
Will McCallum, Education Campaign Worker with ForcesWatch, a public policy group, alerts us to the Edinburgh part of a national series of debates on the presence of the military in schools. This is to take place on 11th October, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the St Augustine centre on George IV Bridge.
‘Comms’ Group meeting tonight
Just a reminder, that the Communications Group within the Parent Council will be meeting tonight at Broughton at 8 pm. This is to review objectives for the year, and agree actions.

Curriculum for Excellence Information Session for Parents, 10 November 2012
6 places have just been offered to Broughton parents or community members for an information session on the Curriculum for Excellence initiative in Secondary Schools. This session, to be held in Tynecastle High School on Saturday 10 November 2012 from 0930 to 1300, will give parents the perfect opportunity to learn the details of all Curriculum for Excellence developments and strategies.
We should like to forward to CfE the names of our first 6 interested individuals by 26 October. Please therefore let us know of your interest as quickly as you can, at intouch@broughtonhighpc.org.
Parent blogger wanted!
This interesting note just came to us from UCAS, the body that manages all the country’s university applications.
‘Have you seen the blogs on UCAS Connect before? Many of them are UCAS applicants writing about their experience of the application process, with lots of handy advice for other students. They’ve been really popular and reassuring for thousands of applicants.
We’re now looking for a parent blogger to join them.
As our parent blogger we’ll ask you to share your journey through the year – from the UCAS application and waiting for offers with your child, through to receiving their results. It’s a great way to help other parents going through the same experience, plus any hints and tips you can give will be really valuable.
All you have to do is submit at least one blog a month but, the more you can think of to blog about the better!

Invitation to the School Final of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI)
Here is an exciting update note to all parents and carers from John Cudlipp, in RMPS. This is an example of what CfE will look like (and that BHS senior years are already benefitting from it in advance of its formal introduction to S4-S6).
‘Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers,
I am writing to invite you to our final of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) at Broughton High School on Wednesday 14th November 2pm-3.30pm.
YPI has positively engaged secondary school students across Scotland and awarded thousands of pounds to small, local, social service charities. In January 2010 the programme was described in The Times as “something every teacher should eagerly find out about and think of introducing to their school.” Since then YPI has continued to develop and gain momentum across Scotland, and has been referenced positively in a number of HMIE School Reports.
S6 students at Broughton high School are currently taking part in YPI. In teams, they have been researching social issues in our community and creating an engaging and persuasive presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle an issue they are passionate about.
At the YPI School Final the winning teams from each class will be presenting in front of a large audience and a panel of high-profile judges, in support of their chosen charities. This event promises to be an inspiring, exciting and dramatic occasion as one team will be awarded a cheque of £3000 to grant towards their chosen charity.
I hope you will be able to attend this event, to hear about the charities and local social issues which pupils at our school have become passionate about.
