Septemberfest 2013!

Welcome back to school, everyone!

It’s time for Septemberfest 2013, the Community Festival at Broughton High School!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, 21st September, from 11am to 4pm.

Entry is free, and there’s lots of activities (many of them free too) for all ages.

Like what?  Like bouncy castles and inflatables for all ages, plus sumo suits and a massive climbing tower.  There’s music and dance, with the samba band, rock choir, drumming group, and dance workshops.  You’ll find lots of sports tasters and competitions, too, including football, rugby, fencing, tennis, basketball, korfball, and table tennis.  Don’t miss the craft fair, with loads of fantastic handcrafted goods. Come and have a go wet-felting, leather-working, jewellery-making or decoupaging.  Get your bike fixed for free and have a go at the bike obstacle course, or try riding a unicycle. Sit in a fire engine and ring the siren. Get into some face-painting, visit the nail bar, have a coconut shy.  We’ve even got a fantastic balloon artist, and a henna tattoo lady.  You’ll be starving after all that, so the village café will be selling tea and cakes, BBQ, pizza, curry, crepes, and ice cream.

It’s quite a Saturday, so come along and have some fun!

200 Club summer winners

grant money

What! The first 200 Club draw of 2013-14? Technically, yes, even though it’s still summertime. And here are the lucky players who have won some hot-weather spending money this week:

1st place: £40.00 (Mrs E Todd)
2nd place: £25.00 (Mr D Martin)
3rd place: £19.00 (Mr R H Taylor)
4th place: £13.00 (Mr D Brownlee)
5th place: £10.00 (Ms C Virtue)

Total pay-out: £107.00
Total income for the school: £266.00

And here, for your beach reading, are some interesting facts from the 2012-13 year:

• Total income from the 200 Club: £3,311
• Total prize-giving: £1,451
• Surplus for year: £1,860
• Accumulated surplus waiting to be spent: £7,565
• Active members in the 200 Club: 63
• Members who have won at least once: 35
• Members who have made a net gain over the year (totalling £155 between them): 11
• The biggest winning streaks: One person won 6 times, yielding £95 in total (a £35 gain) over the year. 4 others won 3 times, and 12 won twice. 12 members won at least £50 (each) throughout the year.

You can’t win if you don’t play — and if you do play, it’s ALWAYS good for Broughton High!

SQA Results … what to do when they come

sqa_logo

On Tuesday 6 August you will receive your SQA results by text or post. We hope that everyone achieves the results they deserve. However, if results are not as expected and you wish to contact the school to speak to someone, phone 0131 332 7805 between 9am and 3pm.

If you have not met your university condition, and you think that you are eligible for an appeal, contact the school to make an appointment to speak to Mrs Bennett. There is a fast track appeal process for students in this situation.

If you are not eligible for an appeal (for example, you did not do well in your prelim) you will need to consider other options such as finding another course with lower entrance requirements through UCAS Clearance or looking at a college course.

If you have not met the entry requirements for one of your subjects, and you wish to continue in the same subject but at the lower level, you do not have to do anything. Your course will automatically be amended. If you wish to be re-coursed, contact the School Office to make an appointment with Ms Cumming.

If you wish to change your course because you have performed better (or worse) than you expected, contact the School Office to make an appointment to see Ms Cumming for a change of course.

Sounds Like Saturday’s brilliant finale

music notes

Thanks for your fantastic and persistent efforts over the last year, says Hugh Duffy. He reports that he keeps bumping into people who say ‘you’re one of the Saturday morning cafe folk’, and that ‘it’s a great thing’. This is clearly a great way to help the school, and what a positive message it sends to our community! Says Hugh, ‘Thanks very much to all the volunteers who helped this year.’

Overall profit for the year? £1,690.25 Smashing!

And this is on top of raising £492.62 for red nose day.

Ella Duffy’s big year

getting there

Ella Duffy (now S6) has been successful in her selection for Project Trust! She plans on spending a year in Guyana after leaving school, on a social work project. She’ll be back in touch with us about fundraising — meantime, she’s off to a great start!

Ella has also won a place at the Oxford University summer school, studying Geography.

What a spectacular finish for year 5!
